$1,000 Pill Released for Hepatitis C
A landmark drug has been created for the treatment of Hepatitis C, a deadly liver virus that infects three to five times more people than HIV. However, access to the drug sofobuvir, brand name Sovaldi, is being limited by its price of $1,000 per pill. The drug is expected to completely cure 90 percent of patients of hepatitis C with few side effects. The price of the new drug, released by Gilead Sciences Inc., has spurred widespread debate when more than 3 million Americans are infected.
