12-year-old Shoots Peers Before Teacher Talks him into Surrendering
A 12-year-old boy walked into his Roswell middle school gym in New Mexico on Tuesday morning and shot two of his peers before being convinced by a teacher to surrender. After sneaking in a 20 gauge, sawed-off shotgun in his bag, the boy shot an 11-year-old boy in the face and neck and a 13-year-old girl in the shoulder. Both were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Mr. Masterson, an eighth-grade social studies teacher, rushed in to persuade the boy to drop the gun after the shootings even though the shotgun was directed at him. The boy obliged and was taken into custody by an off-duty state police officer who was dropping off his own child when the incident occurred. Police would not discuss motive, but there was an indication that the wounded boy was the shooter's target. The boy was taken to a psychiatric hospital on Tuesday afternoon and his parents are expected to give a statement on Wednesday.
