Air Force Pilot Steps in During Midflight Emergency
When the pilot of a United 373 suffered a heart attack midflight from Des Moines to Denver, an Air Force pilot aboard the flight stepped in to help land the plane. Air Force Capt. Mark Gongol and his wife and daughter were traveling aboard the plane when a passenger announcement asked if anyone aboard was a pilot. Gongol handled communications with controllers and aided the first officer to safely land the plane in Nebraska. Gongol was responsible for piloting B1B Lancer bombers in the Air Force.
