Word got out that Apple purchased a social media analytics company, Topsy, which indexes social data from Twitter and judges social buzz to newly released products. With the deal worth more than $200 million, Apple shares have rose as high as $563.44. Being one of the leading Twitter analysis firms, Topsy can offer Apple an edge by accumulating feedback from social media users on both its own products and those of competitors. It could also offer recommendations for the iTunes store based on reader reviews.
