Australians Offer Solidarity to Muslims with #illridewithyou Hashtag During Sydney Siege
In the midst of the terror caused by the Sydney siege, Australians formed solidarity with Muslims by bonding together with the hashtag #illridewithyou. The hashtag started when Sydney-commuter Rachael Jacobs noticed a Muslim woman quietly taking off her hijab, presumably because she was fearful of confrontation with the unfolding Islamist hostage situation. Jacobs told the woman, "No, if you want to wear it, then wear it. I'll walk with you." Hundreds of Australians across the country followed her lead using the hashtag and ensuring Australian-Muslims felt safe in a time of terror for all.
