Coal Ash Sites Must Come to an End, Judge Rules Against Duke for Groundwater Pollution
Wake County Superior Judge Paul Ridgeway ruled that Duke Energy must immediately stop the source of groundwater pollution at its 14 coal-fired power plants in NC. The ruling reverses North Carolina's Environmental Management Commission's decision; Ridgeway said state law wasn't properly enforced when Duke was not forced to clean up its coal ash ponds. The legal disputes follow the coal ash spill at Dan River where 35,000 tons of coal ash were dumped into the river. Cape Fear River Watch, Sierra Club, Waterkeeper Alliance and Western North Carolina Alliance in 2012 were the ones to bring about the appeal.
