Copenhagen Zoo Kills Giraffe and Feeds to Lions
The Copenhagen Zoo put down Marius, a healthy male 2-year-old giraffe, to "prevent inbreeding" and fed its remains to the lions as visitors watched. The zoo ignored offers from other zoos to take the giraffe and an online petition signed by more than 20,000 people to save the giraffe. The giraffe was killed by a bolt pistol, and children were allowed to watch as it was skinned and fed to lions. The zoo argues that it was an "important display of scientific knowledge about animals." The reasoning behind the giraffe's death was in accordance with recommendations from the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, which ensures the highest standards for breeding programs.
