Crimea Declares Independence, Splits from Ukraine to 'Join Russia'
The Crimea Parliament declared its independence from Ukraine on Monday, leading to a round of applause from Russia and a vow from U.S. President Barack Obama to "increase the cost" if the Kremlin efforts continued. The Black Sea peninsula will now merge with Russia, a security crisis that has Washington and the European Union freezing assets and issuing travel bans. Russian troops have gathered near the border of eastern Ukraine while Ukraine's acting president has mobilized around 20,000 military reservists and volunteers with the vow that Ukraine will not give up Crimea.
