E. Coli Scare Causes Massive Ground Beef Recall
After 11 people are sick from E. coli O157:H7 infections, Wolverine Packing Co. announced that it will recall 1.8 million pounds of ground beef in four states. E. coli can cause food poisoning and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in children and the elderly. Federal officials have yet to disclose the unnamed states affected, though they are positive the ground beef was not used in federal Department of Defense programs, the National School Lunch Program or in internet sales. Recovery usually takes a week, with symptoms ranging from dehydration to kidney failure.
