Ex-Miss Venezuela Killed in Roadside Robbery
While on vacation for New Year's in the mountains of western Venezuela, the popular soap-opera actress and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her ex-husband were shot and killed and their daughter was wounded after trying to foil an assault by robbers. Spear, 29, was returning by car to Caracas with Thomas Henry Berry, a 39-year-old British citizen, when their tires were punctured by sharp objects placed on an isolated stretch of highway. They were killed after locking themselves inside of the car. Their daughter, Maya, was in stable condition after being treated for a leg injury and is now residing with relatives. The shooting caused an outrage on social media as fatal shootings are becoming common in armed robberies in Venezuela. Police have arrested five suspects so far.
