FBI Busts 7 Members of 'Ndrangheta Drug-Smuggling Ring
FBI officials in New York teamed up with the Italian National police to make several arrests associated with the 'Ndrangheta, one of the world's most powerful cocaine-and heroin-smuggling criminal syndicates. Seven arrests were made in New York and 17 members of the organization were arrested in Italy before they could gain a foothold in the U.S. The defendants' plan was to smuggle South American drugs through Guyana in containers of frozen fish and pineapples to a port in Calabria with the help of a corrupt port official. They sold 1.3 kilograms to an undercover FBI agent for planned distribution in the U.S. The seven men are set to appear in federal court on Tuesday.
