Former Marine 'Bakes to Death' in Rikers Island Jail Cell
After being arrested for trespassing when he slept in an enclosed stairway, a 56-year-old former Marine "baked to death" in his cell at Rikers Island jail. The mentally ill homeless man was supposed to be checked on every 15 minutes but was left alone for four hours when temperatures exceeded 100 degrees. There was a small vent that was not opened in the cell and the man was on prescription medicine that made him more susceptible to heat. Officials are investigating technical problems and adjusting thermostats accordingly.
