Hurricane Arthur Becomes Category 2, Forces Outer Banks Evacuations
Hurricane Arthur is gaining traction over the Atlantic and threatens to become a strong Category 2 on Independence Day. Max winds have reached 90 mph as of Thursday morning and it is barreling toward the Outer Banks from about 260 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, N.C. Hatteras island is under mandatory evacuation orders, causing an estimated 35,000 people to leave through the single road, North Carolina Route 12, off the island. Heavy rains along with storm surges and dangerous rip tips have all been predicted once the storm hits on Friday.
