Maliki Steps Down as Prime Minister in Iraq
After causing many to fear a military coup, Iraq Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki has agreed to relinquish power. His choice to step down comes after heavy pressure from the United States, which deployed military airdrops in Iraq to target Sunni Islamist. Maliki, 64, will end his legal resistance against his replacement, Haider al-Abadi, 62, who was chosen Monday by Iraq's president.
