Maryam Mirzakhani Becomes First Female Mathematician to Receive a Fields Medal
Iranian Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman in history to be awarded the Fields Medal today, an honor many call math's equivalent to the Nobel Prize. The Fields Medal is only awarded every four years. Mirzakhani, 37, is a professor at Stanford University and was awarded for her "highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems." Mirzakhani stated, "I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians."
