Miami Politicians Propose South Florida as 51st State
The Mayor and South Miami City Commission are proposing the legal separation of Florida (State of Florida) into two states because of the lack of concern about rising sea levels. "South Florida" would become the 51st state essentially comprised of 24 counties roughly from Orlando down. The proposal was made by Vice Mayor Walter Harris and passed with a 3-2 vote at the city commission. The resolution will go to proposed "South Florida" counties and would have to gain Florida Congressional approval before being passed.
