Obama Administration Announces $1 Billion in aid to Ukraine
After Russia's military interference in Crimea and Ukraine's continued attempts at government reform, the Obama administration pledged $1 billion in economic and energy aid to Ukraine on Tuesday. President Obama is also considering economic sanctions against Russia, including the options of freezing assets, visa bans, and trade and investment penalties. Secretary of State John Kerry is now in Kiev discussing a package of reforms the new government must implement in order to receive support from the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin is undeterred by threatened sanctions, making the statement that "he reserves the right to protect Russian-speaking people in Ukraine in the wake of what he called "an anti-constitutional" coup."
