Obama Announces Syria Airstrikes as Part of ISIS Retaliation
President Obama announced airstrikes on Syria as part of a strategy to destroy the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, but guaranteed American troops would not be put on the ground in the region. This will mean lifting U.S. restrictions, which formally kept air power retained to Iraq. An additional 475 troops will also be sent to Iraq to help train and advise Iraqi Security Forces totaling 1,600 U.S. troops present in the area. Obama's strategy focuses on air power and support for partner forces as opposed to previously-used combat troops fighting on foreign soil.
