Ohio Amish Beard-Cutting Hate Crimes Overturned
An appeals court overturned the 2011 hate-crime convictions of 16 Amish men and women in Ohio beard-and-hair-cutting attacks against members of their faith. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled the attacks were provoked by the authoritarian style of Sam Mullet Sr., the leader of the Bergholz community, instead of being fueled by religious motives. Amish attorneys say they will be seeking the release of Mullet along with seven other Amish men.
