Outbreak of Polio-like Disease in California Children
More than a dozen cases of a rare, polio-like disease that renders one or more limbs paralyzed, have been reported in California children within the past year. Doctors are warning parents in the area to take children to seek medical attention immediately should they display signs of weakness in their limbs or symptoms of paralysis. 2 of the 20 studied cases statewide have been identified as the disease enterovirus-68 from the same family as the polio viruses. Polio vaccinations are encouraged but will not guarantee children protection from the disease.
