Proposed Cali. Bill Could End SeaWorld Orca Performances
Richard Bloom, a Democrat from Santa Monica, is proposing a bill that if passed will prohibit San Diego's SeaWorld from using orcas in entertainment performances. The bill would also ban breeding in captivity, and the import and export of killer whales. Retired orcas would be allowed to be displayed at the theme park, but eventually retired to sea pens. Bloom's inspiration for the bill came from the documentary, "Blackfish," which accounts for the history of orcas in captivity and the death of a 2010 SeaWorld trainer. SeaWorld claims the film is misleading.
