Protesters Leave Ukrainian Justice Ministry to Avoid State of Emergency Being Called
In the latest move in the unraveling series of clashes between protesters and the Ukrainian government, protesters who had seized the Ukrainian Justice Ministry left the building after the Prime Minister warned she would call a state of emergency. The demonstrators said they moved in order to avoid difficulties in negotiations with the government and opposition. Thousands of demonstrators have amassed in central Kiev and violence has overshadowed the city for weeks after Ukraine announced that it would not sign a trade pact with the EU in November and four activists were killed by riot police. Ukraine opted to instead borrow another $2 billion from Russia as they agreed on cheap gas for Kiev in December to help its former Soviet republic pay their debts.
