Russian Petition Seeks to Reclaim Alaska
A petition written in "clunky" English has found its way onto the White House website formally seeking the return of Alaska to Russia. Alaska was bought from a czar for $7.2 million almost a century and a half ago. The petition has already been signed by more than 37,000 people or more than a third of the required 100,000 needed before April 20th to have a formal response from the Obama administration. Its timing is generating even more tension after President Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea. According to The Moscow Times, the petition was uploaded by a pro-Kremlin group trying to show flaws in the White House petition as opposed to actually getting Alaska back.
