Tennessee to Criminally Charge Pregnant Women Using Drugs
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam passed a bill that will allow the state to bring criminal charges against pregnant women who "use drugs for potentially harming their fetuses" beginning July 1. Opponents of the bill argued the approach would dissuade women dealing with substance abuse from coming forward to medical clinics for treatment. The bill was brought forward because of the growing number of babies born with a condition known as neonatal abstinence syndrome, or infants born dependent on drugs. Five national medical organizations have already voiced their opposition.
