U.S. Bombs Sunni Militant Artillery and Makes Humanitarian Drops in Iraq
With President Obama's approval, two U.S. F-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on Sunni militants in Iraq on Friday. The bombs hit artillery being used against Kurdish forces while humanitarian drops of 5,300 gallons of water and 8,000 ready-to-eat meals were made to aid 40,000 Yazidi refugees stranded on a northern Iraq mountain range. The group was ousted by Sunni militants also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. This is the first major U.S. intervention since U.S. troops left Iraq in 2011.
