U.S. Navy SEALs Pull off Successful Raid Recapturing Oil Tanker from Libyan Rebels
U.S. Navy SEALs successfully pulled off a seaborne raid when they took control of an oil tanker with illegal cargo of crude oil being sold by Libyan rebels. Struggling with a weak central government, Libya has faced problems from tribal-based militias. One of those groups is that of Ibrahim Jathran, whose rebels have blockaded key oil ports for months in demand of greater share of oil revenues. The North Korean-flagged tanker that sailed from Libya last week left despite attempts from ousted Prime Minister Ali Zeidan to prevent them from leaving. The raid was supported by the governments of Libya and Cyprus, which may instigate further public backlash to Libya's leadership for seeking U.S. support.
