World's Oldest Orca Seen Off Canadian Coast
Granny, the world's oldest known orca whale, was seen in Cowichan Bay leading her pod from California into the southern Strait of Georgia. the average lifespan for orcas is between 60 and 80 years; Granny, also known as J-2, is 103 years old. Granny travels with three pods and is the matriarch of a 25 member pod. The whales had just made an 800-mile swim from California in less than eight days, a remarkable feat for a whale her age.
